Rep. John P. Murtha has announced his endorsement of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, bringing his clout as a 17-term member of the House and a prominent anti-war Democrat to bear with more than a month until the primary here in his home state.
Murtha may have "clout" as a 17-term member of Congress, but he's also the King of Pork there, the Prince of Naked Power Plays, and the poster boy for out-of-control spending: a model of the kind of politics Barack Obama claims to want to change. Not good for a candidate known for pork barrelling herself. Then there's the issue of John Murtha's, er, questionable ethics. And while Hillary finally picks up another super delegate after a prolonged absence, I'd expect the Obama campaign to hammer home these negatives.
One negative, though, that Obama won't touch is the fact that Murtha is the leading Democratic defeatist on the war in Iraq, having spent practically all of 2007 disingenuously trying to legislate our defeat there. His position, therefore, isn't that far off from Obama's...
